How to wash a bikeUpdated 13 days ago
Keeping your bike clean every 4–6 weeks (or after riding in the rain) ensures it looks great, stays safe, and lasts longer. Follow these simple steps to give your child’s bike a thorough wash.
What You’ll Need
• Bucket, warm water, and rags: Basic cleaning essentials.
• Brushes or sponges: Old toothbrushes and soft sponges work too.
• Soap: Use diluted dish soap or bike wash.
• Degreaser: For cleaning the chain and drivetrain.
• Chain lubricant: Use wet lube for rainy climates or dry lube for dry conditions.
Cleaning Process
1. The Frame
• Mix soap and water in a bucket.
• Wet the bike to loosen dirt.
• Scrub cables, tubes, and brake pads with a soapy brush.
• Clean the seat post and handlebars with a sponge.
• Rinse and dry with a towel.
2. The Wheels
• Scrub tires, spokes, hubs, and rims with a soapy brush.
• Rinse both wheels thoroughly.
3. The Drivetrain
• Wipe the crankset, chainrings, and pedals with a wet rag.
• Scrub chainrings and sprockets with a stiff brush or toothbrush.
• Apply degreaser to the derailleurs and chain, scrub, and rinse.
4. Lubrication
• Once the chain is dry, apply a small dab of lube to each link.
• Let it dry, then wipe off excess lube to prevent grit buildup.
